The first time Gare du Nord station was built by the architect of the Ponts et Chaussées by order of the company Compagnie des chemins de fer du Nord. It was first inaugurated in 1846, the same year that the line Paris-Amiens-Lille was created. However, it was not big enough to contain all the transportation system and the demand of the local population, so it was demolished and then rebuilt, in order to create a bigger station. The project was later on picked up by the architect ​​ Jakob Ignaz Hittorff, who built the station as we know it today. In particular, the station has 23 statues that adorn it, representing the first 23 main cities that are connected to the station by the transportation system.
