Cologne between past and present
Although little is left of the ancient city, Cologne has nevertheless retained its charm. Unfortunately, during the Second World War, its iconic buildings were completely destroyed (very few were saved), but fortunately, the cruelty of the conflict saved the Cathedral, one of the most beautiful Gothic-style churches in the world! Even if the building was hit 14 times during aerial bombardment, it did not collapse.
The city center is also very modern, full of stores, restaurants and shopping centers! We also recommend a walk along the Danube river!
The full name of this majestic Cathedral is "Church of Saints Peter and Mary" (in German "Hohe Domkirche St. Peter und Maria") and, after the cathedral of Ulm, it is the second highest church in Germany and the third highest of the world. Its wonderful cuspidate towers are 157 meters high and can be seen from miles away. The construction of the temple began in 1248, but it took more than 600 years for its completion.
For its great historical and artistic interest, the church is considered one of the most appreciated attractions in the country (in 2004 it was visited by almost six million people).
